Typebar is a typewriter that types along at the bottom of your Mac’s screen. It doesn’t collect your data: there are no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no tracking, and the app has no network code of its own. This page explains what it does with your typing, what stays on your Mac, and how purchases work.
What Typebar does with your typing
To move the typewriter as you type in other apps, Typebar asks macOS for Input Monitoring. It only listens: it never changes, blocks or sends your keystrokes, and it uses only which key went down and what kind it was (a letter, a space, a return, a backspace, a tab or shift).
With real keys, the default, the typewriter strikes the key you pressed and prints it on its paper, on your screen. With random keys, each keystroke lands on a random key and the paper prints random letters. Terminals and apps Typebar can’t identify get random keys unless you choose otherwise, and in standard password fields macOS doesn’t pass keystrokes on, so the typewriter doesn’t move. You can switch to random keys, for every app or only some, from the typewriter in the menu bar.
What stays on your Mac
The sheet in the typewriter, and every sheet you write, is saved in Typebar’s own folder on your Mac so it’s still there after a restart. With real keys, a sheet holds what you typed. Sheets appear in the Library, where you can read, export or delete them. By default a sheet fades through its last week and is deleted 30 days after its last keystroke; you can choose to keep sheets instead.
Your settings are saved on your Mac too. None of this is sent to us or to anyone else.
Trial and purchases
The free trial and purchases go through Apple’s App Store. Typebar asks the App Store whether you have a trial or a purchase; Apple handles payment, and we never see your payment details. Apple’s privacy policy covers what the App Store does: apple.com/legal/privacy.
If you have allowed it in your Mac’s settings, Apple may share anonymous crash reports and usage statistics with us through App Store Connect.
